Phan Thiet & Mui Ne 2026 — the complete beach-resort guide

Phan Thiết is the largest city on the south-east coast of Lâm Đồng province (before the 2025 reform, Bình Thuận), one of the region's headline beach destinations per Vietnam Travel. The city itself is a working fishing port with markets and malls — little for a visitor to do. The holiday side of things is all in Mũi Né, 20 km up the coast to the north-east. In everyday speech Mui Ne counts as a district of Phan Thiet, but in practice it is a separate strip of hotels, restaurants and kite schools along the beach, and that is where travellers stay.

Why come? Dunes that genuinely look like the Sahara. World-class kitesurfing, with wind blowing 25+ days a month from November to March. And a quirk of climate: the dunes block rain clouds, so this stretch stays drier than almost anywhere on the coast — drier than neighbouring Nha Trang. The trade-offs are real too: it is a 3–4 hour haul from Ho Chi Minh City, some resorts feel dated, and the strip leans heavily on package tourism, with plenty of Russian signage and menus.

Where Phan Thiet is and how to get there

Phan Thiet airport — what is happening

Short version: there are no civilian flights yet, and none are expected in 2026. The military section, with a 3,050 m runway, opened in December 2025. The civilian terminal is being built by Sun Group — it broke ground in April 2026, with an opening expected in 2027–2028 and capacity for up to 2 million passengers a year. Until then, fly into Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat, SGN) and continue overland.

Beaches of Phan Thiet & Mui Ne

Phan Thiet weather by month

One of the driest resorts in Vietnam. Air 27–34 °C, water 23–30 °C all year. November to April is the dry season; May to October brings rain, usually short bursts of an hour or two. The dunes act as a heat shield and keep the clouds out. The most comfortable swimming months are January to April, when the sea is calmest. Dunes, Fairy Stream and the fishing village

Ta Cu Mountain and the reclining Buddha

28 km south of Phan Thiet. The 49-metre reclining Buddha is one of the largest in the country. Cable car up plus entry is about 250,000 VND (~$10).

Po Shanu Cham Towers

Three Cham brick towers from the late 8th to early 9th century. Entry is 15,000 VND (~$0.60).

Kê Gà Lighthouse

Vietnam's tallest and oldest lighthouse according to the national records centre: a 35 m tower with the light 65 m above the sea, 183 steps. The French built it in 1897–1898, and it has been lit since 1900. A boat to the islet costs 50,000–100,000 VND; from the top there is a coastal panorama for miles.

What to fit into two or three days

Three nights is the sweet spot. Any less and the drive from Ho Chi Minh City eats most of your first day.

• Day 1. Arrive, check in around Mui Ne, hit the beach, then a seafood dinner. An evening stroll along the main resort road.
• Day 2. The classic dune loop: an early start at the Red Dunes or the fishing village, the Fairy Stream, then the White Dunes, back by lunch. Afternoon for a kite lesson or the pool.
• Day 3. Kê Gà Lighthouse or Ta Cu Mountain and its reclining Buddha, a fish-sauce tasting, and coffee and cashews to take home.

Tours from Phan Thiet

Kitesurfing

Food & seafood — where to eat

Phan Thiet is one of Vietnam's main centres of nước mắm fish-sauce production. Seafood is on the boat in the morning and on your plate by lunch. • Seafood — buy it in the morning at the fish market and ask a nearby eatery to cook it for 30,000–50,000 VND (~$1.20–2)
• Bánh canh chả cá — a hot noodle soup with fish cake, a local specialty
• Bánh mì — the Vietnamese baguette (from 15,000 VND / ~$0.60)
• Phở — at local spots from 35,000 VND (~$1.40)

Shopping — what to buy and take home

• Coffee — whole bean and ground (from 50,000 VND / ~$2 for 250 g)
• Nước mắm fish sauce — look for a Phú Hải or Phan Thiết label
• Cashew nuts — 100,000–200,000 VND (~$4–8) for 500 g
• Natural cosmetics — coconut oil, aloe
• Spices — turmeric, pepper, star anise

Practical tips and common mistakes

Visa

It depends on your passport. Many nationalities — most EU countries, the UK and others under Vietnam's waiver scheme — get up to 45 days visa-free. Everyone else applies online for a 90-day e-visa at evisa.gov.vn. Your passport must be valid for at least six more months.

Connectivity

A Viettel or Mobifone SIM costs from 100,000 VND (~$4) for 30–60 GB. Buy it at an official operator shop with your passport, or set up an eSIM (Airalo, Holafly) before you fly. Wi-Fi is in every hotel.

Money

The currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND). Cards work at resorts and bigger restaurants, but the dunes, markets and small eateries are cash-only — carry notes. Change money at a bank or a licensed counter in Phan Thiet rather than at the airport. Since 9 February 2026, exchanging currency outside licensed points has been an offence under Decree 340/2025/NĐ-CP. A gold shop may change money only with an exchange-agent certificate from the State Bank, and a tourist has no way to check it — a bank is the safer bet. ATMs charge a 50,000–60,000 VND fee per withdrawal, so take out larger amounts at once.

Safety

The resort is calm. Watch for pickpockets in crowds, chaotic traffic, the sun (SPF 50+ is a must) and jellyfish from May to October.

Common mistakes

1. Travelling without insurance. A broken bone at a private clinic starts around $1,000; two weeks of cover costs $15–30
2. Changing money at the airport. Worst rate there — change in town at a bank or a licensed counter instead
3. Renting a motorbike with no experience. Traffic is chaotic and the rules are loose. If in doubt, take Grab or a taxi
4. Not bargaining. The opening price at a market is inflated by 50–200%
5. Hitting the dunes at noon. The sand heats to 50+ °C — go at sunrise or sunset only
6. Drinking tap water. Bottled only — 5,000–10,000 VND for 1.5 litres
7. Forgetting sunscreen. The UV index runs 8–11; you burn in half an hour
