The classic first-day move. In 4-5 hours you loop the main Nha Trang attractions - one of Vietnam's top beach resorts - in an air-conditioned coach with a guide, and get a feel for where you'll want to come back on your own.

What's on the itinerary

• Po Nagar Cham Towers - heritage of the Champa kingdom, over 1,000 years old. The complex sits on a hill with a panoramic view over the Cai River and the city. Entry: 30,000 VND (~$1.20).
• Long Son Pagoda - the main Buddhist temple of Khanh Hoa province. The White Buddha at the top is 193 steps up (152 to the Reclining Buddha halfway). The view from the top is worth every step. Free entry.

Da Lat day trip from Nha Trang

Da Lat sits at 1,500 m, the gateway to the Central Highlands. It's 18-24 C year-round, with pine forests, lakes and an old European-resort feel. Distance from Nha Trang: 140 km, and the mountain switchbacks take about 3 hours.

Da Lat in 1 day

Hotel pickup around 07:00, back by 20:00-21:00. The standard route:

• Crazy House - a hotel-museum of wild, Gaudi-esque architecture, designed by Dang Viet Nga, daughter of Truong Chinh, the former party general secretary and head of state.
• Clay Tunnel - a sculpture park of clay figures 3-7 m tall.
• Datanla Falls - an alpine coaster carries you down the forested slope.
• Linh Phuoc Pagoda - a temple entirely tiled in mosaic made from broken crockery.

Price: $40-55 (1,040,000-1,430,000 VND). Lunch is usually extra (150,000-250,000 VND, ~$6-10).

Da Lat in 2 days

The extended route adds to the one-day itinerary:

• Glass Bridge - 325 m long, 90 m above the treetops.
• Hobbit Village - an Instagram-bait spot of little houses in the hills.

Da Nang and Hoi An

530 km from Nha Trang - and a completely different world. Central Vietnam, with its ancient towns, mountain resorts and the famous Golden Bridge, deserves a trip of its own. The overnight sleeper bus takes 9-10 hours. Flat berths, USB charging, blankets and air-con make the ride bearable.

Itinerary (2 days)

Day 1:

• Arrive in Da Nang in the morning, breakfast.
• Ba Na Hills - a mountain resort at 1,400 m. Cable car 5,800 m long.
• Golden Bridge - a walkway cradled in giant stone hands, the "Hands of God."
• Transfer to Hoi An (30 minutes).

Day 2:

• Hoi An - an open-air museum town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the evening: hundreds of paper lanterns, a night market, boat rides on the Thu Bon River.
• Dragon Bridge in Da Nang - 666 m, with a fire-and-water show on Saturday and Sunday nights at 21:00.

Island hopping

Nha Trang Bay holds 19 islands scattered across the turquoise water of the South China Sea. The tours take you to the best of them - with monkeys, coral reefs or white-sand beaches.

Northern Islands - Monkey Island and Orchid Island

The most family-friendly tour in Nha Trang. Monkey Island (Hon Lao) is home to around 1,500 macaques - fully tame, climbing onto shoulders and posing for photos. Just watch your things: the monkeys snatch sunglasses and phones.

Southern Islands and snorkelling

The boat runs to Hon Mun, Hon Mot and Hon Mieu - home to some of Vietnam's best coral reefs. Hon Mun is one of Vietnam's first marine protected areas.

One thing to know: the reef has been damaged, and parts of the marine park have been closed to boats and snorkelling. Which zones are open is up to the reserve's management, so check the current status with your operator before booking. Expect patchier coral than the old brochures promise - go for the water and the boat day, not a pristine reef.

VinWonders theme park

Hon Tre island, reached by a 3,320 m cable car strung over the sea - getting into the park is a thrill in itself. Inside: a water park, rides, an aquarium tunnel, a mermaid show and an evening fountain show. Budget a full day for the whole loop.

Yang Bay Eco Park and Ba Ho Waterfalls

Two of the best options for anyone who wants to break out of the beach and into raw nature.

Yang Bay Eco Park

An hour west of Nha Trang, up into the mountains. The park runs along a river: three waterfalls, open-air hot mineral springs, a mini zoo with crocodiles and a go-kart area.

Price: $50 (1,300,000 VND) adult / $40 (1,040,000 VND) child. Includes transfer, entry and the springs. Suits all ages - almost no physical effort.

Ba Ho Waterfalls

25 km north of Nha Trang. Ba Ho means "three lakes" in Vietnamese: the waterfall drops down the mountain and forms three natural pools at different levels. The first is an easy 15-minute walk. The second is a scramble over boulders (another 20 minutes). The third is a rock trek, in places with ropes. Wear trainers, nothing else.

Mud baths and hot springs

Nha Trang's three main mud-bath centres cover every budget and taste. Thap Ba and I-Resort sit in the north of the city, 100 Eggs further south in a banana grove.

Thap Ba is Nha Trang's first mud spa and the best-known. In the budget option you share a tub with 10-15 people. I-Resort is more modern, with a Finnish sauna and hammam. 100 Eggs is the most Instagrammable: tubs shaped like giant eggs, a tropical garden with waterfalls.

Opening hours differ between the three, so check before you go. Go at opening time - fewer people, cleaner mud.

Active tours - diving, ATVs, fishing

Diving and snorkelling

Hon Mun (Hon Mun) is one of Vietnam's first marine reserves. Underwater visibility up to 15 m, coral gardens, clownfish, starfish, rays.

ATV / quad bikes

A jungle safari in the foothills west of Nha Trang. The route runs through Vietnamese villages, rice paddies and rainforest. Price: $49 (~1,275,000 VND). Duration 3-4 hours.

Sea fishing

Common mistakes when choosing tours

Booking through the hotel front desk. A 30-50% markup for the same trip. Book directly with an operator or on a platform - the price difference is real.

Ignoring the season. Sea tours live and die by the weather. October-December brings waves, murky water and choppy crossings. Best time for the sea: February-August.

Not carrying cash. Most local operators take cash only. ATMs exist, but withdrawals on a foreign card usually carry a fee, and many cap you at low limits.

Not checking what's included. A "Da Lat tour for $35" may not cover entry ($10-15), lunch (100,000-200,000 VND) or the alpine coaster ($5). Suddenly it's $55, not $35.

Buying the cheapest tour going. A $25 tour when everyone else charges $40 should give you pause. The saving usually means a group of 25-30 instead of 10-15, a cheap lunch and an old bus.
