Dalat Flower Festival 2026: dates, programme and how to do it right

The 11th Dalat Flower Festival opens on the evening of 19 December 2026 at Lam Vien Square and closes on 31 December with a New Year concert. In between sit 36 programmes and activities, eleven of them flagship events. The last edition, in 2024, drew two million visits, and total revenue across the local economy topped VND 3,600 billion.

One thing to get straight first. It is 11 August 2026, four months out, and the province has not published a day-by-day schedule yet. The ceremony dates, the theme, the list of flagship programmes and some venues are confirmed. The jazz line-up, the exhibition addresses, whether there will be a drone show — none of that is public, and it will land closer to November. This guide keeps the two categories separate.

Most travellers do not fly to Vietnam for a flower festival. They are already building a December route and deciding whether to run it through Da Lat while the city is at full volume, or deliberately around it. That is the actual question here, and the honest answer depends on which week you pick. If the highlands are new to you, start with the Da Lat city guide.

What the Dalat Flower Festival actually is

Festival Hoa Đà Lạt is one of Vietnam's largest flower events. The first ran in 2005, and since 2022 it has been held in even years. Da Lat sits at 1,500 metres in the central highlands, grows roses, chrysanthemums, hydrangeas and orchids year-round, and for two weeks each December turns itself into one continuous installation: beds along the lakefront, light arches over the streets, stages on the squares, pop-up markets in the side lanes.

The scale has changed beyond recognition in twenty years.

Twenty-five times the visitors and three times the duration. This is no longer a weekend with flowers; it is the event that carries the province's annual tourism numbers. Lam Dong welcomed its ten-millionth visitor of 2024.

The music theme is not random branding. On 31 October 2023 Da Lat joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the music category, alongside Hoi An in crafts. Then came the administrative reform of 1 July 2025: Da Lat as a standalone city ceased to exist, dissolved into wards within an enlarged Lam Dong province. The title was granted to a city that formally no longer exists.

The province backs the music title with programming: hence the jazz festival, the carnival and the arts evenings on the 2026 bill. The flower festival has become the shop window for musical Da Lat.

Now the downside, stated plainly. This festival is built for Vietnamese visitors. English signage is thin, the official programme is Vietnamese-only, and timings shift. Want a printed schedule and reliable start times? You will be frustrated. Happy to walk a lot and take what the evening gives you? You will have a very good time.

Festival dates 2026: confirmed vs unannounced

The core of the 11th festival runs 19–31 December 2026. The opening ceremony takes place on the evening of 19 December at 8:00 pm on Lam Vien Square and is broadcast live on Vietnamese national television. The closing is merged with the New Year arts programme on the evening of 31 December. A handful of side activities carry into the first days of January 2027.

The province also announced a campaign window from 1 April 2026 to 5 January 2027, which confuses people. That is not a nine-month festival. It is a year-round flower city policy: street greening, neighbourhood garden competitions, planting drives. The event you would actually travel for is those two weeks in December.

The sources also disagree with each other. The province's March plan listed 15 flagship and 35 supporting programmes; the final June plan says 11 and 25. The national tourism portal vietnam.travel gives a loose 1–31 December range. We follow the Lam Dong provincial plan, which is both more recent and more specific.

In 2024 the detailed programme appeared roughly four to five weeks before the start. Expect the same this time: exact event dates and venue addresses around early to mid-November 2026. You can lock travel dates now; leave the hour-by-hour planning for autumn.

The programme: 11 flagship events

The 2026 bill has 11 flagship programmes and 25 supporting activities, 36 in total. Districts, communes and companies submitted proposals until 30 June 2026, and the supporting list has never been published as a set.

What matters to a visitor, and what does not.

The backbone is the flower installations around Xuan Huong Lake. They go up along the waterfront and the central streets, they are free, they stand around the clock, and they are lit at night. This is what most people come for, and it is the one part that works without a schedule: turn up when you like, leave when you have had enough.

The jazz festival is new for 2026 and the most interesting line on the list. Venues are announced as around the lake; performers are not announced at all. If the music theme gets real investment rather than a box-tick for UNESCO, this will be the highlight of the fortnight.

The tea, coffee and wine street is the food-and-drink block, built around OCOP produce (a national one commune, one product scheme). Da Lat is one of Vietnam's main coffee and wine regions, so the tastings are not decorative. Local varieties and the better roasteries are covered in the Da Lat coffee and wine guide.

The carnival is an evening procession with bands and dancers; in past editions the crowd density made it move at queue speed. The orchid and floral art exhibitions will appeal if you care about the industry rather than photo backdrops, though as of August the venues are still unnamed.

And then there is the last third of the list. A golf invitational and a seminar on flower value chains are industry-and-sponsor events. They will never enter a traveller's itinerary, yet they count towards the headline 36 events. When you see that number in a press release, discount it by about a third.

Where it all happens

The festival spreads across the city, but three anchors carry it: Lam Vien Square, the Xuan Huong Lake promenade and the Dalat Flower Gardens. All three sit in the centre, 10 to 25 minutes apart on foot.

Lam Vien Square (Quảng trường Lâm Viên) is the main stage. It opened in 2016, covers 72,000 m², cost the budget VND 681 billion and holds roughly 60,000 people. Two glass pavilions shaped like a sunflower bud and an artichoke light up at night and give Da Lat its most recognisable frame. There is underground parking beneath it, which in festival week solves half your logistics.

Xuan Huong Lake (Hồ Xuân Hương) is artificial, 25 hectares, two kilometres end to end. Engineer Labbé dammed the Cam Ly stream between 1919 and 1923; the current stone dam went up in 1934–35. The full promenade loop is about five kilometres, ninety minutes at an unhurried pace. During the festival the installations, the jazz stages and the carnival all live here.

The Dalat Flower Gardens (Vườn hoa thành phố Đà Lạt) have been running since 1966 and hold over 300 plant species. Entry is 30,000 VND (~$1.15), which makes this the only major venue with a gate. Weekends get dense.

Two more sites usually get bolted onto a festival itinerary: the Valley of Love five kilometres north (250,000 VND, ~$9.5, open 8:30 am to 5:00 pm) and the railway station from 1938, where entry is 50,000 VND (~$2) and the heritage train to Trai Mat village costs 108,000 VND (~$4) return. Instead:

• the centre with the lake and the square → Phường Xuân Hương – Đà Lạt;
• the station, the flower gardens and the Valley of Love → Phường Lâm Viên – Đà Lạt;
• the western side with Van Thanh village → Phường Cam Ly – Đà Lạt.

If a listing or a review says Phuong 8, ignore that part of the address. Street name and house number still work; the ward does not.

The flower villages almost no visitor reaches

Those installations do not materialise out of nowhere. The flowers are grown in two villages on the edge of town, and you can simply turn up — which, unlike the festival venues, means arriving without a crowd.

Van Thanh (Làng hoa Vạn Thành) is the largest rose operation in Da Lat: two hundred hectares of greenhouses along the road towards Cam Ly, and most roses sold in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi start life here. Several farms have set up visitor entrances — 60,000 VND (~$2.3) per adult, 20,000 VND for children 120–140 cm, free below that. You get to walk inside the greenhouses, follow the cycle from cutting to harvest, and photograph whatever you like.

Thai Phien (Làng hoa Thái Phiên) grows chrysanthemums across 320 hectares of high-tech farms with programmed irrigation and supplementary lighting. Entry is free and the gates are open from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Come early: fog sits over the fields between 7 and 9 am, and that is the best light of the day.

A motorbike is the easy way — ten minutes to Van Thanh along Hoang Van Thu, about twenty to Thai Phien across the northeastern edge of town. Grab will take you out there, but expect a wait for the ride back, since few drivers hang around the villages and almost none do after dark. A taxi round trip with waiting time runs 300,000–500,000 VND (~$11–19), which is reasonable split between two or three people. Several Da Lat day tours also fold a farm visit into a coffee-plantation or strawberry-greenhouse run.

The honest caveat: these are working farms, not parks. Dirt tracks between the greenhouses, trucks reversing with crates, the smell of fertiliser, and hardly any English. If you want tidy paths and a café with oat milk, they are not here. If you want to understand how the city actually makes its money, nowhere is better.

December weather and what to pack

December in Da Lat means 22–24 °C by day and 10–13 °C at night and early morning. It is the dry season: 30–100 mm of rain across the month, six to ten wet days, around 210 hours of sunshine. Locally, this is the best month of the year.

The trap is not the numbers, it is the swing. Daytime sun feels pleasant; by 8:00 pm the temperature has fallen to 12–15 °C, and the lakefront adds wind on top. Festival events are evening events. Three hours on an open square in a t-shirt is not going to work.

What you actually need:

• A fleece or light down jacket. Not just in case — every single evening.
• Closed shoes. There is a lot of walking on uneven pavement, and cold feet end the night early.
• A rain shell or compact umbrella; six to ten wet days is still six to ten wet days.
• Sunscreen. UV at 1,500 metres is harsher than 23 °C suggests.

Travellers who fly in from the coast for two nights arrive in shorts. It is the most common December mistake in Da Lat and the most annoying one, because the evening programme is the whole point of being here.

Where to stay and when to book

Book two months out. By our estimate, through festival December Da Lat room rates run 30–50% above normal, and 50–70% above on the nights of 30 and 31 December. Individual guesthouses double or triple, and that is not an exaggeration.

Converted at roughly 26,000 VND to $1 (rate on 11 August 2026). Check live rates on Booking or Agoda — through festival season they move weekly.

No price-ceiling order has been published for 2026, so plan as if there is no ceiling.

If you are going in December, the sequence is:

1. August–September. Book a room with free cancellation. Rates are still baseline and availability is complete.
2. October. Buy the flight or bus ticket for 18–19 December.
3. November. The detailed programme drops. Check it against your dates and move the booking if needed.
4. Early December. Confirm. After the 10th there is very little left in the centre.

On location: anything within walking distance of Xuan Huong Lake and Lam Vien Square removes the festival's biggest headache, which is parking and traffic. The premium buys you an evening where you step out of the hotel and are at the stage in ten minutes, rather than circling for somewhere to leave a motorbike.

Getting to Da Lat

Two options work: fly into Lien Khuong Airport, or take a sleeper bus. There is no intercity rail — the narrow-gauge line to Trai Mat survives purely as a tourist ride.

Flying. Lien Khuong Airport (Sân bay Liên Khương, code DLI) sits at 962 metres, 28–30 km from the centre. Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air both serve it. The Lien Khuong – Prenn expressway (CT.27) opened in 2013, cutting the transfer to 30–50 minutes instead of an hour on the old mountain road. A taxi into town runs 280,000–400,000 VND (~$11–15) plus a 10,000–15,000 VND airport fee.

Bus. Phương Trang (FUTA) and Thành Bưởi cover the Ho Chi Minh City route. Phương Trang includes free in-city shuttles at both ends, which quietly saves you another couple of hundred thousand dong. The overnight service is the efficient choice: you arrive in Da Lat in time for breakfast.

Nha Trang is the busiest route of all, since most people arrive from the coast. The road climbs a pass, and the 9–11 seat limousines claim shorter transit times than the full-size sleepers. Da Nang, on the other hand, is a punishing bus ride: 655 km and up to seventeen hours. Unless the savings are the point, fly it.

On festival surcharges: during the event, sleeper-bus tickets to Da Lat historically rose by about 10,000 VND, and daily car hire by 50,000–70,000 VND. Small money, but seats sell out — book 18–19 and 30–31 December about a month ahead.

What the trip costs

Three days in Da Lat from Ho Chi Minh City comes to roughly $83 per person on a budget, $250 mid-range and $545 in comfort. Accommodation is the swing factor, not food and not tickets.

What is free: the flower installations along the lake and central streets, street performances, the carnival and both ceremonies on Lam Vien Square. In other words, the core festival costs nothing. You pay only at the separately gated sites — the Flower Gardens (~$1.15), the Valley of Love (~$9.5), the railway station (~$2).

Nothing has been announced about paid festival zones for 2026. In previous editions the main venues were free.

Food is cheap enough to soften the whole budget. At the Hoa Binh night market a bánh tráng nướng (Dalat pizza) costs 15,000–40,000 VND ($0.6–1.5), a glass of hot soy milk 10,000–15,000 VND, and lunch at a local restaurant 80,000–150,000 VND ($3–6).

Crowds, traffic and how to dodge them

Central Da Lat starts jamming around nine in the morning during festival days. The worst point is the junction of Trần Nhân Tông and Trần Quốc Toản, right beside the Flower Gardens, where traffic seizes even with police directing it. The lakeside pavements get dense enough that you walk single file.

Here is the thing arriving travellers usually miss: there are two peaks, and they are different. The first is the opening on 19 December. The second is New Year's Eve, 30–31 December. New Year crowds are usually bigger than during festival week itself. Aim for the festival and land on New Year, and you get the city at its worst.

Which gives a simple rule: the sweet spot is 20–27 December. The opening is done, the installations are up, the programme is running, and the New Year wave has not hit.

A day that works:

1. Before 8:30 am. Lakeside installations and the Flower Gardens. Empty, soft light, photographs without strangers' heads in them.
2. 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. Leave the centre. Flower villages, the waterfalls around Da Lat, coffee farms. The city is a car park at this hour.
3. 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Back, and eat near your accommodation.
4. 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Evening programme, lights, stages. Packed, but this is why you came.
5. After 9:30 pm. The promenade thins out again and the lighting is still on.

For the 19 December opening, claim a spot on Lam Vien Square by 7:00 pm, an hour before the start. Later than that and you are watching over shoulders.

Parking is its own saga, covered by Vietnamese outlets under headlines along the lines of: the flower festival is packed, where do I leave the bike? The underground car park beneath Lam Vien Square fills first, after which you are into informal courtyard lots where the price is whatever they say it is. Stay within walking distance of the lake and the whole problem evaporates: in festival week a vehicle in the centre is a liability, not an asset.

Food follows the same logic. Cafés around the lake and at the market run queues on peak evenings, and prices in tourist-facing spots drift up along with hotel rates. Eating at 5:30–6:30 pm, before the evening programme releases everyone, or walking two or three streets back from the water, keeps both the wait and the bill normal.

If what you want from Da Lat is silence, pine forest and fog, December is the wrong month. That version of the city exists from May to September, when it rains, prices fall 20–40% and the waterfalls are at their most impressive.

Practical basics for foreign visitors

Entry. Visas depend on your passport. Citizens of the UK, Norway, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea and 18 EU countries (including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Poland) get 45 days visa-free. Most others, including US, Australian and Canadian travellers, apply for the e-visa at evisa.gov.vn: up to 90 days, $25 single entry or $50 multiple entry. Your passport needs six months' validity.

Cash. Festival stalls and night-market vendors take cash only. Carry 20,000 and 50,000 VND notes — nobody has change for a 500,000. Hotels and larger restaurants accept cards normally.

Getting around. Grab is the default: English interface, fixed fare before you accept, in-app translation, so no Vietnamese required. Paying the driver in cash avoids any foreign-card fees from your bank. In festival evenings, ride availability in the centre collapses entirely.

Connectivity. Buy an eSIM before you fly or at the airport. Da Lat has solid 4G, including out at the flower villages.

Language. English signage at the festival is minimal and the official programme exists only in Vietnamese. Google Translate's camera mode earns its keep here. This is a domestic festival and it makes no pretence otherwise — which is also, honestly, part of why it is worth seeing.

Altitude. At 1,500 metres nothing dramatic happens to your body, but the temperature does drop faster after sunset than anywhere else you will visit in Vietnam.

Book a room with free cancellation for 20–27 December, and put a jacket on your packing list. Those are the two things that cannot wait: the first gets more expensive every week, the second is the thing everyone forgets. Flights, day-by-day routing and event choices all keep until October and November, once the province publishes the detailed schedule.
